OTC: Reid Hires Safe Sutton And Underwelms Chiefs’ Fans / Big 12 Hoops Gets Hot

“The Chiefs reportedly have hired Bob Sutton as their new defensive coordinator and Doug Pederson as their new offensive coordinator. The 61-year-old Sutton has spent the last 13 seasons with the New York Jets, 10 as linebackers coach.”
Adam Teicher, Kansas City Star
GH: Andy Reid spent 14 years with the Eagles. The 61-year-old Sutton, his new choice for the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator, spent 13 seasons with the Jets. This pairing has burnout written on it in neon. When you hire the safe head coach, you get safe, comfy hires all around. Where’s the next John Gruden? Where’s the next Andy Reid? Someplace besides Kansas City.

“I’m just trying to think how you decide on Bob Sutton? I guess I’m just so jaded by the 3-4 garbage defensive line that I’ve had to watch. What am I doing? I build myself up with all these wild expectations… I don’t know, he could be a fine coach.
Steven St. John, 810 AM

“Bob Sutton rush defense: 2006 24th, 2007 29th, 2008 7th.”
Jay Binkley, @3guysinagarage, Twitter

“Disappointment I guess is my first reaction. This and the quarterback are the two biggest hires.”
Jake Gutierrez, on the news that the Chiefs are leaning toward hiring Bob Sutton as their new defensive coordinator, 810 AM

“Hey, most Missouri fans were disappointed in the hiring of Frank Haith – and look how that’s turned out.”
Nate Bukaty, 810 AM

“Will you be getting your picture taken with Bob Sutton?”
Bob Fescoe, joking with Klingler, 610 AM

“Per source, Eric Bieniemy has been hired as Chiefs‘ RBs coach.”
@ProFootballTalk, Twitter
GH: Bieniemy was a bowling-ball type of runner for Colorado during the late 80’s and 1990 who finished third in the Heisman voting his senior year. I remember him rolling up big yardage against Nebraska one game and an elderly Husker fan complained about KFAB’s Kent Pavelka’s play-by-play call of the game. She was upset that the Nebraska announcer was being so rude to the opposition. “I really don’t think the broadcaster should be referring to that Colorado running back as Eric the Enemy,” she scolded.

“For god’s sake at some point, I’d even be happy if we missed on a quarterback! Because at least then we’re in the game and we’re trying to do it the right way!”
Kevin Kietzman, on yet another rant about the Chiefs’ need to draft a quarterback with the number-one pick in the NFL draft, 810 AM
GH: Two things that have been far more predictable than our weather this January – KK will drone on about the Chiefs needing to draft a QB with their first pick and he will also find a way to mention how Scott Pioli is now fired after making light of KK’s quarterback suggestions last May. Even Old Man Kissel has to be getting tired of these rants at this point.

“I’ve spoke with Geno [Smith], not extensively, but I tell you what – he is a heckuva physical specimen. He’s not six foot that they call six-foot-two. He’s six-foot-four and he’s very well put together. And from all accounts, just a heck of a guy. He’s been a model student athlete in that regard.”
Bob Huggins, when asked about West Virginia’s highly-touted quarterback, 810 AM
GH: The NFL draft LOVES specimens. I expect Geno to become more and more attractive as the April draft nears.

“I think the Broncos win this game [against Baltimore] pretty handily. I don’t think there is going to be any doubt throughout the game. At the end of the day, they’re going to be able to do what they want.
Brandon Spano, of Denver’s Mile High Sports Talk Radio, talking to Bob Fescoe and Josh Klingler, 610 AM
GH: This game has the look and feel of those years the Chiefs sauntered into the playoffs with a bye and were spanked by an undeserving underdog. Temps in Denver at game time could be in the single digits. Peyton Manning is going to get a dose of Denver that he has not yet had to deal with as a Bronco. I like Ray Rice and the Ravens in an upset.

“Those to me were the real Minnesota Vikings. They played outside.”
Herm Edwards, waxing nostalgic with Mike and Mike about the Bud Grant led Vikings of the 1960s and ‘70s, ESPN Radio
GH: From 1968 to 1980, Grant’s Vikings won the NFL/C Central Division every year but two. His teams lost four Super Bowl games during that span, the Chiefs, Steelers, Raiders and Dolphins all ended his dream of a Super Bowl title. John Facenda’s voice dubbed Green Bay’s field as the “frozen tundra,” but to me, no NFL stadium looked more forlorn and frigid on black-and-white TV than Minnesota’s Metropolitan Stadium in December and January. Grant was famous for refusing to allow his players to have any heaters on the sideline. To Grant, warmth weakened legs. As a boy I wanted to be a MLB or NFL player – but I did not in any way want to get drafted by any team in Minnesota.

“Hopefully we can fill it with just our fans.”
Rob Heineman, Sporting KC owner, 810 AM
GH: I heard a report on KMBZ that the MLS All-Star Game expects up to 17,000 people will travel to Kansas City for the July 31st game and its surrounding events. Livestrong Sporting Park only seats 18,500. Heineman told Kevin Kietzman Thursday that Sporting’s season ticket renewal was around 95%. I’m no math major but this MLS All-Star ticket might be tougher to snare than the MLB All-Star ticket at The K last July. Could Kansas City sell 35K, 40K or even 50K tickets to this game? Should Heineman and his group consider moving the All-Star Game to Arrowhead? Sounds sacrilegious but I could see where maybe 20K fans get left in the Nebraska Furniture Mart’s parking lot for this one.

“Rodney McGruder has won Big 12 Player of the Week three times. No other player in the league has won it more than once this season.”
D. Scott Fritchen, @DScottFritchen, Twitter
GH: I think McGruder is a stud. My early, early All Big 12 starting five has McGruder, Ben McLemore, Jeff Withey, Baylor’s Pierre Jackson and OSU’s Marcus Smart.

“Missouri was one of just three schools with multiple midseason selections [to the John Wooden Award Midseason Top 25], joining Duke (Mason Plumlee and Seth Curry) and Kansas (Ben McLemore and Jeff Withey).”
David Reiter, MU director of strategic communications, Mizzou press release
GH: I found a couple of interesting notes as I perused this press release and the list of college basketball’s elite. 1) Pressey and Bowers are the only two SEC players on the list of 25. 2) Mizzou mentioned the two KU nominees in their press release. I haven’t seen a press release from Kansas [some OTC reader in the KU SID office needs to add my email to their distribution list] on the Wooden 25, but I’d sure like to know if they mentioned Mizzou’s Pressey and Bowers.

“I think the Big 12’s been terrific [for West Virginia]. They have certainly welcomed us and been very supportive. It’s a heckuva conference. Everybody wants to say it’s a football move but when you look around, it’s a heckuva basketball league. I think it’s been good for us. I know our people are excited.”
Bob Huggins, head coach at West Virginia, 810 AM
GH: Hugs is being kind to the quality of the Big 12 hoops this season. It’s just average right now. Maybe WVU, Texas, Oklahoma and ISU will wake up and make a run at the NCAA tourney. But right now I have KU, OSU, Baylor and KSU as the only four gimmees into the tourney.

“The travel’s hard. I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you the travel is hard. We flew to Kansas State and got in there at 4:40 in the morning because we had some mechanical problems. Getting out we had some more mechanical and weather problems and got back about 5:30 in the morning. That was on a Thursday night and we played Miami on a Saturday afternoon.”
Bob Huggins, head coach at West Virginia, 810 AM
GH: I think the travel is one reason I believe West Virginia will never win a football or basketball Big 12 conference title. It’s just ridiculously unfair for the Mountaineers to have to travel so far for nine away games when each conference foe only travels to Morgantown once.

“I’ll tell you this; this thing about it’s hard to [travel] into Morgantown? It ain’t easy to get into those other places either. Who are they kidding?”
Bob Huggins, head coach at West Virginia, 810 AM
GH: Lubbock, Manhattan, College Station, Ames…are not exactly hubs but they aren’t Morgantown either. That is a whole ‘nother universe.

“Newspapers may be dying, but the New York Times still received 1,644 applications for 13 summer intern positions. Wow.”

  1. Jim says:

MLS news? It’s official. Slow news day.

  2. Bill says:

Greg, where does this journalism major send a resume?

  3. Arte says:

Bud Grant’s Vikings lost 4 Super Bowls. You forgot the Dolphins also beat them.

  4. Old Man Kissel says:

“For god’s sake at some point, I’d even be happy if we missed on a quarterback! Because at least then we’re in the game and we’re trying to do it the right way!”

    KK for three….yes!!!!!!!!

KK is right, KC needs to draft a QB at the top spot. Even if he bombs Ryan Leaf style atleast the Chiefs tried. That’s more then King Peterson and Egoli ever did.

    810 scoops 610 once again.

  5. Gavin says:

No one can call WVU’s travel schedule “unfair” since they knew their travel schedule would be affected and chose to join anyway. If they didn’t want the travel, they probably should’ve stayed in the Big East.

  6. JP says:

The Chiefs have tried. Remember Steve Fuller, Todd Blackledge, Mike Elkins, Matt Blundin and Brodie Croyle. All First through Third Round picks who flamed out in KC. We don’t need to try, we need to succeed, and if that means the 2nd round, so be it. Get an impact player with the first pick.

The Coaches will succeed provided they have the right talent around them. I am not ready to panic, but I don’t see a Brian Daboll in any of the coaches hired thus far.

I disagree with Greg about the Donkeys, this game screams of a beatdown by Denver against a rapidly aging Ravens team. I see around 31-6 Denver, and this is from someone who hates the Broncos will all of my heart. I hope I’m wrong and you are right Greg. When Joe Flacco is the other QB, it makes that pick so much easier. BTW, I also like New England, San Francisco and Seattle in the other games.

    • Greg Hall says:

      JP,
I agree the Donks should be heavily favored (and are at 10) but I think the weather in Denver will be rougher on their passing game than it will be on Ray Rice.

      • JP says:

Greg, you called it, I was wrong and happy to admit it. There was a reason many wondered about Peyton playing for a “cold weather” team. He was wearing gloves and a coat at the coin toss. He was uncomfortable and mentally that can be costly in a playoff game. Take away the 2 special teams TD’s and this game wasn’t that close.

Congrats on the pick. For the record, I was celebrating when the FG was good. Always great to see Denver go out in the playoffs.

  7. Hot Carl says:

As much as I think Kietz is a world class ass-hat he does have a point. However, this is obviously not the year to reach for a QB. There are about 5-6 QBs that are all on the same level as each other and not one that stands head and shoulders above the rest. Ideally, they could trade the #1, move down and still take the QB they want later in the first. If they can’t trade the pick there’s no reason to panic. Take the best available player at #1 and one of those 5-6 QBs will be sitting there with the first pick in the second round.

    • hammy says:

but there isn’t really a clear #1 in any position. Maybe the LT from aTm but that is about it. Jarvis Jones is great but would never be a #1 overall in any other draft.

  8. The Smartman says:

Instead of putting together the Wu Tang Klan or the Beastie Boys, Andy is giving us REO Speedwagon. Nice! All 2013-14 will show us is how bad Pioli, Haley and Crennel were. 2015 and beyond will show us what a bad long term hire Andy was. Rob Ryan would have been the perfect hire for DC.

So Geno Smith is a “physical specimen”. Nice! That should look good on his Chippendales resume. I don’t recall anybody referring to Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Brett Favre or Aaron Rogers as “physical specimens”.

Travel my ass. This isn’t the residents of John Knox Village going to Jerusalem. This is young kids with lots and lots of energy going half way across country to do,what they do best….play a fucking game. Next excuse for losing.

MLS All Star game in KC? Big Fucking Deal! Nobody of any consequence cares, seriously. The major beneficiaries will be the strip clubs in Lawrence.

  9. chuck says:

Wow. That would be the pick of the year Greg. MGM, Ceasars, Stations, Wynn et al, they have the Boncos at 9.5 favorites.

Very, very ballsy pick dude! :)

Smarty, Andy Reid thinks we are “Cherry Cherry” gave us Neil Diamond.

    Broncos, 37 to Ravens 17.

    :)

    • The Smartman says:

      Where it began
      I can’t begin to know
But then I know we’re doing wrong
      The better bet
      Would have been Chip Kelly
      At least he don’t sing
      The same old song

      Sweet Andy Reid
      BAH BAH BAH
You’re a washed up coaching fuck
      Sweet Andy Reid
      BAH BAH BAH
      10 to 1 says they’ll still suck

      Or my favorite

      I run the ball
      You tell me no
      You know that Quinn
      He cannot throw
      PLAY ME!

      Or the Glazer version

      I am the bull
      You are the cow
      I am the pig
      You are the sow
      LAY ME!

  10. Super Dave says:

    Sorry meant +1

  11. Orphan of the Road says:

Is the honeymoon over already? Andy don’t care. He took on rabid dawgs and real journalists for 14-years. Are the Cupcakes of KC going to make him shit his pants? Does he care what people think?

Hank Stram’s coffin is spinnin’ like a dreidel as he spies the style and excellent taste Andy Reid brings to the sidelines. Speaking of taste, who is gonna dare try and pass off their fries as Crab Fries?

Will Stretch sink his DelCo claws into Andy for his cheesesteak fixes? Or will OK Joe’s next location be Andy’s house?

In the interim, let us evaluate the talent we have here at QB. Andy sez we do have talent. Seriously? Talent?

Wait till he trades places in the draft with the Raiders, just a straight-up trade for them to pick ahead. That will be my deja vu moment all over again.

    Cue Springsteen’s Glory Days…

  12. chuck says:

    WE ARE NOT WORTHY!!!

Nice call from Greg on the Baltimore game!!!!

    :)

    • The Smartman says:

Agreed! Ballsy call Greg! I apologize for thinking that you are suffering from the onset of dementia. My Bad! Only fitting that the savior who lifted them up all season let them down when it really counted. Let’s just hope we don’t wind up with the Herbaugh sisters in the Superbowl. The back story on that will give everybody diabetes. ESPN might even replace Suzy Kolber with Oprah and Keith Ablow.

  13. Smartman says:

jim schaff has done a great job for the Chiefs. He deserves to be given an extended contract.
I think bono will be a big time qb if he gets the chance to play every week while the others sit on the bench. I watched miami in the game today and they looked really good. I think this qb they have is as good as marino.
I look for tebow to be traded to the knicks this off season and when that happens you can be sure that they’ll be back in the playoffs.
