“I don’t think anybody thought this team could miss the NCAA tournament but I don’t think there’s any other way to look at it. There is a distinct chance. They cannot win in somebody else’s building.”
Gabe DeArmond, 810 AM
GH: Yes, not only did Mizzou’s SEC rookie season in football result in a bowl-less nightmare football season but now the Tigers’ first run at a basketball title looks doomed. No bowl and no NCAA tourney for MU? Well, at least Mike Alden has plans to spend all that money pouring into Columbia from the SEC.
“This team doesn’t deserve the tournament. LSU and A&M are very poor teams and they are beating the RKelly out of us.”
Scott Cruse, @SLLKC
“Missouri, how could you be so heartless?”
Carrington Harrison, @cdotharrison, Twitter
GH: Jon Sundvold has said that last season the two Kansas City guards, Marcus Denmon and Michael Dixon, were tough-minded players who refused to back down from their opponents. The Tigers look imposing during the lay-up drills but then play like a group of transfer students – all looking a bit lost in Mizzou black and gold. Haith has gathered some talent this season but he has done nothing to make them resemble a team with which Missouri fans can identify.
“My head, heart, fist, feet and coffee table all hurt right now!””
Kim English, @Englishcope24, the former Tiger, following MU’s loss at TAMU, Twitter
“[Missouri] has the most schizophrenic team that I’ve seen. They look like world beaters at home and then they go on the road and not only lose but get blown out! They’ve got talent obviously.”
Matt Doherty, 810 AM
“Frank Haith out coached AGAIN by an undermanned opponent. The Tigers are loaded, no reason for this.”
Peter Fleischer, @Peter_Fleischer, Twitter
GH: Call me blind, but I still think Missouri has more talent than almost every other team in the SEC. If MU can stumble into the NCAA tourney, I really think they have the talent to knock off a one-seed.
“It has been a long time since I have seen a team that is as bad at defending the perimeter as Missouri. Missouri is just awful at defending the perimeter. When other teams are shooting 40% and 50% from the three-point line, that’s on you! Frank Haith has continually said this is a better defensive team than last year’s team. It is not. It is a poor defensive team. ”
Gabe DeArmond, 810 AM
GH: I don’t think MU’s defensive liabilities are limited to their putrid protection of the three-point arc. I see too many backdoor layups and open shooters in every facet of their opponent’s offense. Good defense is simply a “want-to” aspect of a basketball team. Haith’s squad looks like they’re more into “what should I do?”
“How about MU not getting back on the 4 on 1. You have to try to win. Try harder than just giving refs dirty looks when not getting calls.”
Soren Petro, @theprogramkc, Twitter
“Frank Haith has no choice. He must take his pants off. There is no other option.”
Joe Walljasper, @JoeWalljasper, on Haith’s routine during each close game of removing apparel as the game becomes more dire, Twitter
GH: Isn’t that what got Bill Self in trouble at home?
“There were a number of things to dislike about [Mizzou’s game at A&M] and almost all of them involved Phil Pressey or Frank Haith.”
Gabe DeArmond, 810 AM
“Man, Phil Pressey makes it hard to love him sometimes.”
Sam Mellinger, @mellinger, Twitter
GH: Pressey’s game at Texas A&M went from an afternoon stroll with your dog through Loose Park into a drunken 3:00 AM high-speed chase through Westport. And it ended just as you would expect – with Pressey upside down in Brush Creek covered in dung.
“Pressey got Missou back into the game by going to the rim every time. But pulls up for a contested 3 when all he needs is 2 to win?”
Dan Wolken, @DanWolken, Twitter
GH: Pressey was a pedestrian on the perimeter during the first half of the game. He took over in the final few minutes and magically willed the Tigers not only back in the game but into the lead. And then Pressey Flipped. Read on.
“Terrible sequence for Phil Pressey. Throws ball away for no reason, abandons Harris to double Turner, misses three at end. Not good enough.”
Mike DeCourcy, @tsnmike, Twitter
GH: Many chapters have been written about how Phil Pressey implodes at crunch time. The chapter he wrote Thursday night in College Station is the kind of science fiction that would make Stephen King cringe. His “pass” into the stands to allow Texas A&M an opportunity to win the game in the last 20 seconds might be the most baffling maneuver in Phil’s college career – and Phil’s list is an impressive one.
“Nothing wrong with the Pressey 3-pt attempt in final seconds. The throw-away on the previous possession, awful.”
Blair Kerkhoff, @BlairKerkhoff, Twitter
GH: Kerkhoff is the only person I saw who was fine with Pressey’s decision to cast a trey with six ticks on the clock. Well, I’m sure the A&M crowd liked it.
“An inexplicable 24 footer with six seconds on the clock and Jabari Brown standing all alone in the corner.”
Gabe DeArmond, on yet another Pressey cast-iron-cryin’ trey to lose the game, 810 AM
“No. 21 Missouri now 0-5 on the road after losing at Texas A&M. Mizzou is the only Top-25 team without a road win this season.”
GH: This stat might be even more embarrassing for Frank Haith than Nevin Shapiro.
“This is why I never gloat. …. When you’re an MU fan, humility is always a game away…”
Kurtis Seaboldt, @KSeaboldt, Twitter
“Twitter is fun- KU fan meltdowns last night, MU fan meltdowns tonight- college basketball is a fickle girlfriend.”
Robert Sigrist, @DocSig, Twitter
“How much blame do you put on Bill Self for that [TCU] game? I say 5% or less.”
Danny Parkins, 610 AM
GH: Bill Self is paid almost $4 million a year as the head coach of Kansas University. Elijah Johnson and his teammates are not paid a dime. But Parkins thinks they should shoulder 95% of the blame? That is the definition of a soft media.
“Don’t think of this [KU/TCU game] as a conference game. Forget that this was a conference game! This was a completely non-competitive team! This was a complete and utter disaster by the Kansas Jayhawks.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: Is KK saying that TCU is headed back to the WAC?
“When you’re terrible two games in a row, it leads me to believe there is some serious internal trouble.”
Danny Clinkscale, on Kansas’ two-game losing streak, 810 AM
GH: If Kansas stumbles in Norman on Saturday, there are going to be more storylines to explain the Hawks’ demise than an episode of Scandal to chase down.
“I think they’re going to be really good or really bad. However it goes, it’s going to be an interesting story to tell.”
Dave Armstrong, on how he sees the next two months for the Kansas Jayhawks, 810 AM
GH: Really good is KU easily wins the Big 12 for the ninth straight time. Really bad means KU loses five more conference games and is a six seed in the NCAA tourney. Mizzou would take that really bad scenario.
“Look, I don’t want to attack Matt Brown…”
Soren Petro, hesitating on leveling any criticism toward the UMKC head basketball coach, as he discussed how Oral Roberts is able to recruit more and better Kansas City-area athletes than the Roos, 810 AM
GH: Petro doesn’t want to attack one of the worst coaches in UMKN history? You know what I was saying about soft media? BTW; UMKC to the WAC? Yeah, that makes about as much sense as their Kangaroo mascot.
“I’ll come out of a broadcast and think I did a pretty good job and then [check out Twitter]. There are some real jerks out there who say some real personal things.”
Matt Doherty, 810 AM
GH: Ahhh, the thin skin of the media glows always translucent.
“I don’t know why you’re saying I need to lay off Alabama fans! Alabama fans aren’t laying off of me! … When you say I need to lay off of Alabama, you talk to your whacked-out fringe lunatic fan base and tell them they need to lay off of me!”
Tim Brando, to an Alabama caller on his sports talk show, Sirius XM 91
GH: Roll Damn Tide…
