Bob Davis: “You ever seen anything like this?”
Greg Gurley: “I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything like this.”
As the two called the TCU’s upset win over Kansas from Fort Worth Wednesday night, Jayhawk Radio Network
GH: John Renshaw was the first I heard to call the world of sports the greatest reality show ever conceived. Someone else once said, “You can’t make this stuff up.” I doubt any of us will ever forget where we were when TCU beat Kansas in basketball – and likely for a lot of different reasons. Read on.
“Kietzman might host a live postgame show tonight.”
Jason Whitlock, @WhitlockJason, tweeting during the KU/TCU game, Twitter
GH: Old Big Sexy knows KK at least as well as I do. He knows that a KU basketball loss is even better than a Kansas State win for Kietzman. All you need to do is read between the lines with Kevin.
“That is the most pathetic effort I’ve ever seen from a KU team. It’s an absolute mess right now. Self may not be able to fix it.”
Jack Harry, @jackharrykshb, Twitter
GH: Mad Jack called for Kansas to drop football last season, when he was so giddy about the Jayhawks under Turner Gill. There is nothing like a huge loss by Kansas or Mizzou to bring out the best hate in this rivalry.
“Don’t we get at least one of those tweets from Jack [Harry] every year?”
Nate Bukaty, responding to Mad Jack’s tweet, 810 AM
“It’s a Frog eat Hawk world.”
Tim Fitzgerald, @LifeofFitz, publisher of PowerCat Illustrated, Twitter
“KU fans throw jokes at everyone else all year long and we take it. We know your history but today you gonna take these jokes. You earned em. This is for every Mike Dixon joke I got.”
Carrington Harrison, @cdotharrison, Twitter
GH: I’m not as positive as Carrington that Mizzou is gracious in taking these barbs from Jayhawk fans. But what fun would that be?
“Yeah the worst recruiting class in the SEC makes the day fantastic huh?”
Bob Fescoe, @bobfescoe, responding to a tweet from a Mizzou fan and referencing the Tigers’ football recruiting class that was signed on Wednesday, Twitter
“I do love Mizzou, but for all the KU rants I have- it sure would be nice to say we just lost back to back games for the first time since 06.”
Shake Pepper, @shakepepper, Twitter
GH: Common sense does exist in this KU/MU rivalry and it comes in the form of a Pepper.
“This is the worst team Kansas has put on the floor since Dr. Naismith has been there.”
Bill Self, in his postgame comments from TCU, 610 AM
GH: Apparently, Coach Self doesn’t think any of his team’s poor play is a reflection of how he publicly eviscerated them after the loss at home to OSU. Self cut his team’s psyche deeply once again in Fort Worth with his postgame comments. Read on.
“This is not a bad loss; it’s an unbelievably bad loss. … We’re probably in the worst funk I’ve ever seen a Kansas team be in.”
Bill Self, in his postgame comments, Kansas Jayhawk Radio
“It’s not so much that we lost, but it’s that we were kind of the bullies of the league, and we let people think that they could whip us, and when they did, everybody now thinks that they can whip us. We just opened the floodgates. If we’re going to get everybody’s best shot two weeks ago, think now what it’s going to be like when everybody thinks they’re going to win?”
Bill Self, in his postgame comments, Kansas Jayhawk Radio
GH: I was assured by many that Self knows his team best and what buttons to push to refocus and motivate his senior-laden team. His team’s zombie-like play at TCU made no difference as to how Self handles his public postgame comments. I am not sure Self is correct in mashing that same “public embarrassment” button over and over.
“They were not confident. And that blew my mind that a team like Kansas did not have confidence. They lost their poise and they lost their confidence and it spread like wildfire through the entire team.”
Matt Doherty, who was ESPN’s color analyst for the KU/TCU game, 810 AM
GH: I believe that KU’s lack of confidence was at least partly due to Self’s verbal blasts following the OSU loss.
“I hate to say it but we’re not a confident bunch. … It’s a ridiculous thing on the confidence level. … We’re not a tough team. We’re soft, spoiled…this thing has turned on a dime.”
Bill Self, in an interview with Greg Gurley following the loss to TCU, Jayhawk Radio Network
“Wonder if Self’s over the top comments about Johnson and the Jayhawks after Saturday’s OSU loss did even more damage to this team’s psyche.”
Jason King, @JasonKingESPN, Twitter
“I think it was brilliant.”
Tom Keegan, columnist for KUSports.com, when asked by Kevin Kietzman prior to the TCU game if Bill Self may have erred in how he publicly criticized his team after their home loss to Oklahoma State, 810 AM
GH: Keegan drinks far too deeply from the KU Kool-Aid jug for my tastes – especially when it comes to covering Bill Self and the KU basketball team. In his mind, Self can do no wrong. There are some pretty dicey rumors floating about Lawrence [a thread regarding these rumors was recently removed from Phog.net] and Bill Self that will test the cozy relationship that the Journal-World and Bill Self share. As a columnist, Keegan should be front and center in determining the validity of these rumors and if they are having a Gary Pinkel like effect on the suddenly floundering Jayhawks.
“If James Naismith had known Kansas University one day would butcher the game of basketball as badly as it did in the first half of a stunning loss Wednesday night in Fort Worth… It looked that awful from my couch, where I watched because I thought the better story, Charlie Weis’ strong signing day, was in Lawrence.”
Tom Keegan, KUSports.com
GH: This game was such a no-brainer that Keegan didn’t even travel to Fort Worth to cover it. This wasn’t just an upset. This was an upset for the ages.
“I’ve never seen something like this that I can remember in my years of playing or coaching.”
Matt Doherty, after Kansas was upset at TCU 62-55, ESPNU
“I wonder how many KSU players Matt Daugherty thinks could start for the Jayhawks tonight?”
Soren Petro, @theprogramkc, referencing a comment Doherty made earlier this season about K-State’s lack of talent, Twitter
GH: A beautifully crafted tweet by Petro at the former KU assistant coach.
“Worst loss of the Bill Self era – and it’s not even close. Worse than Bucknell.”
Jason King, @JasonKingESPN, Twitter
“Seeing folks call this worst loss of Bill Self era. It’s probably the worst loss in the Self/Roy Williams/Larry Brown era.”
Blair Kerkhoff, @BlairKerkhoff, Twitter
“In terms of RPI difference between the teams, TCU’s win is the biggest upset in the 20 years I’ve been tracking numbers.”
Jerry Palm, @jppalmCBS, Twitter
GH: Palm had assigned KU a 97% chance of victory at TCU. Yep, this was an upset that you just can’t even imagine happening let alone watch happen. I had nightmares last night about the game and I’m a Nebraska fan.
“Fear The Phrog.”
Connor Cape, @ccape5, Twitter
GH: The Kansas City Star went with the headline: “Croak!” But I don’t know if you can beat Fear the Phrog. I also saw TC-EEEW.
“Kansas loses to TCU, with what will be called around the country a big upset.”
Bob Davis, Kansas Jayhawk Radio
GH: Davis is one of the more entertaining homers in the history of play-by-play. But he has aged to form a crusty skin over his fiery calls. What he really detests is a court storming by the opposition. Read on.
“They are pouring out of the stands here. They are trying to get the Kansas team out of here but the security guys are just standing there watching!
Bob Davis, as the TCU crowd stormed the court following their upset over fifth-ranked KU, Jayhawk Radio Network
GH: I watched the TCU students “storm” the court in maybe the mildest postgame celebration in college hoops history. It looked like a few hundred fans jumping up and down, high fiving the players and coaches. The KU players were in more danger during the game of being hit by one of the many bricks the Horned Frog players cast in the general vicinity of the backboard. I’m not saying TCU was bad, I’m saying TCU was god awful!
“We’re going to take calls but just think for a minute before you make your statement.”
David Lawrence, as he and Josh Klingler opened the phones to calls to the Jayhawk postgame radio show, Jayhawk Radio Network
GH: These college postgame shows are broadcast on the school’s network and hosted by broadcasters who are paid to keep the home team in a positive light. The Jayhawks’ postgame show is not like Jack Harry’s Chiefs’ postgamer on 810. I would have loved to hear a no-holds barred postgame radio call-in show that invited KU, K-State and MU fans to chime in. It would have best been broadcast on satellite radio to allow for the effusive profanity. BTW, Props to Lawrence and Klingler for still fielding calls on the postgame radio show when I went to bed at midnight.
“Wow. I have Jayhawk fans killing Bill Self on twitter. You are spoiled, my friends. Try being a UMKC hoops fan. (No offense intended).”
Fran Fraschilla, @franfraschilla, Twitter
GH: I don’t know who Fran Frasch follows on Twitter but I didn’t see any outpouring of bile toward Self by KU loyalists. Fran must have gotten his Twitter feed confused with a hotline out of Columbia.
“The biggest problem with this #kubball team is there are NO solutions to the problems. NONE.”
Bob Fescoe, @bobfescoe, Twitter
GH: Some KU homers like Fescoe were ready to jump from a tall building after last night. The Hawks are still tied for first in the Big 12 at 19-3. They might still survive Armageddon.
“It’s Feb. 6, right? OK. Just checking…”
Matt Tait, @mctait, Twitter
GH: The best thing about a devastating loss in conference play to an NCAA basketball team is that it means almost nothing when you consider the team’s goal is the Final Four.
“losing games like this … build championship teams.”
Tyshawn Taylor, @tyshawntaylor, Twitter
GH: TT lost some tough games at Kansas. But no one at Kansas has ever lost one like this. The next few weeks could be the most interesting the Big 12 basketball has ever experienced.
“People have punched us in the mouth and we haven’t responded very well. I do believe we’ll get it turn [around].”
Bill Self, Jayhawk Radio Network
“We thought we regrouped after the loss on Saturday but maybe bigger problems are out there.”
Greg Gurley, KU color analyst, Kansas Jayhawk Radio
GH: KU doesn’t even remotely resemble the team they were in December. Can they get that back? Has Self destroyed their confidence to the point of no return? Tune in Saturday as the greatest reality show in the Big 12 rolls into Norman.
