OTC: Chiefs Sign Ex-Mizzou QB Chase Daniel / Let The Fan/Media Controversy Begin!

“The Chiefs didn’t just solve their starting quarterback problem Tuesday, when they completed a trade with the San Francisco 49ers to acquire Alex Smith. They overhauled the position by also agreeing to contract terms with their new backup, former Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel.”
Adam Teicher, Chiefs’ beat writer, Kansas City Star
GH: Okay, we might have to consider rewriting the lyrics to Kansas City’s signature song. “They’ve got some crazy little quarterbacks there and I’m gonna get me some…season tickets.”

“I do not believe the Chiefs have solved their quarterback issues. I don’t! I think we have a new set of quarterback issues that won’t go away. They have not solved the quarterback problem. They haven’t!”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: Ah, it wouldn’t be the Chiefs’ off-season if KK wasn’t complaining about the team’s GM and yet another move that looks like he is distancing the team even further from Geno Smith – Kietzman’s personal pick as the franchise’s next Len Dawson. Speaking of Lenny the Cool…

“The last time the Chiefs acquired the top two quarterbacks on the depth chart in the same year was 1962, when they added Len Dawson and Eddie Wilson.”
Adam Teicher, Kansas City Star
GH: Chase Daniel may end up being just as forgettable to Chiefs’ fans as Eddie Wilson. But here in the midst of March Madness, his familiar name and ties to Mizzou and the Big 12 are the kind of stuff that fuels a football fan’s excitement for July camp to open in St. Joe, MO. Get ready Pony Express’ birthplace, because the crowds that are going to be clogging I-29 to head north for a look at the new Chiefs are going to be staggering.

“Chase Daniel won the biggest game ever played at Arrowhead.”
Dan Noellsch, @TigerDan4, referring to Daniel leading number-three ranked Mizzou to a win over then number-two ranked Kansas in the 2007 season finale at Arrowhead, Twitter

“Kansas fans hate the move! Yes, yes, they hate the move! Missouri fans would hate it if Todd Reesing was the back-up quarterback for the Chiefs. That’s what fans do.”
Josh Klingler, 610 AM
GH: As deeply entrenched and understanding of this KU/MU rivalry as a Nebraska boy could be, I don’t get this one at all. A coworker of mine who is a KU grad stopped by my office this morning and said, “Looks like I’m going to have to become a Broncos’ fan.” When I asked him why, his answer was direct. “Because even Chase Daniels [sic] as a Chief couldn’t make me root for the Raiders.”

Read on for Reesing’s and Daniel’s college stats from their sophomore, junior and senior seasons. We were sure lucky to have those two guys in our backyards for their college years.

Todd Reesing’s stats at KU:
2007 33 TDs 7 INTs
2008 32 TDs 13 INTs
2009 22 TDs 10 INTs

Chase Daniel’s stats at MU:
2006 28 TDs 10 INTs
2007 33 TDs 11 INTs
2008 39 TDs 18 INTs

“You’re going to have portions of the Chiefs’ fan base screaming for Chase Daniel because he’s pretty much the best Missouri quarterback of all time.”
Jay Binkley, 610 AM
GH: Screaming? Maybe the fringe freaks who suffer from Mizzou Flu but I would guess most MU fans simply see this as a decent back up who is a serious upgrade from Brady Quinn and Stanzi. Or are most Mizzou fans on the fringe freaks side? KU fans are not allowed to answer this rhetorical question…

“All the idiot Missouri fans are going to be calling for him to replace Alex Smith. If the dude was good he would have landed somewhere and be playing by now.”
Caller to the Big Show, who is not sold on Daniel being an answer for the Chiefs, 610 AM

“There is no doubt in my mind that [Chase Daniel’s] jersey outsells Alex Smith’s.”
Mike Welch, 610 AM

“I wonder how many people are going to order their [Chiefs] jersey with ‘Daniels’ with the ‘s’ on the end instead of Daniel.”
Jay Binkley, 610 AM
GH: So let’s go over this once again because it seems to be a real pet peeve of Mizzou fans – Chase’s last name is singular, as in Daniel. That’s kind of what happens to career back-up quarterbacks, they get their names misspoken and misspelled.

“Neither one of these guys is proven – although Alex Smith came really close to proving he couldn’t play in this league. He came really close!”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: How miserable is Kevin Kietzman’s life that he can’t enjoy what everyone else in the city is enjoying? Alex Smith was a play away from taking the 49ers to the 2012 Super Bowl. Relax, KK. We aren’t going to hold it against you when Alex is leading the Chiefs to a win over Peyton manning and Geno Smith is getting his ass kicked in Minnesota…much.

“People are saying he’s a great back up. What does that mean? I don’t know what that means? How do you know? He’s thrown nine passes in the NFL!”
Bob Fescoe, 610 AM
GH: No one knows much at all about how Daniel will perform in a real NFL game. THAT is what is exciting. We all know too well how Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn performed.

“If there is any chance that there is a quarterback in this draft that could become a franchise quarterback, the Chiefs better go get him!”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: Kietzman seems to think the Chiefs are on his payroll rather than the opposite.

“First Chase Daniel, then Hoch to the bullpen. Nobody wake me up. Ever.”
Jared Speckman, @Speck60, after the Royals announced their decision to move Luke Hochevar to the bullpen Twitter

“Uh, no. I don’t think so.”
Matt Williamson, NFL analyst, when asked if the Chiefs can get anything in a trade for Matt Cassel, 810 AM

Jesus God in heaven, it is 3:15 on 810 Sports Radio and Kevin is just gettin all over Jack Harry about Geno Smith and Chase Daniel, blah, blah, blah…

    Therapy dude, therapy.

The man is cellularly obsessed with Geno Smith.

I hope someone remembers this if Geno goes right down the Blaine Gabbert crapper, cause I am old and will forget.

In between breaths I can hear Jack Harry re thinking his entire life.

“How did I end up here?”

  2. RIchard Cranium says:

I’m sorry, but if you are a KU fan, and you are willing to root for a Missouri “great”, then you are not a KU fan. Rather you are a KSU football fan, and a KU basketball fan. Also you live in Mission, and have a wife that is screwing someone from she met at her “gym”.

    • Phaedrus says:

I think you take your college affiliation just a bit too seriously. It’s just a school…dare I say you need to get a life.

    • Hoppy says:

Speaking of KK wandering off the path….i give you Richard Cranium as example B

I don’t agree. I hate KU as much as any MU fan but if a former Jayhawk great led the Chiefs to victories, I’d cheer him. I’m a OKC Thunder fan and I root for Nick Collison. MU fans hate Nebraska but we all cheered for Neil Smith and Will Shields when they were Chiefs. Once a guy becomes a pro the college he went to shouldn’t be a negative.

  3. chuck says:

KK is really, really nuts today.

He has wandered off of the “psycho” path and is lost in the woods.

  4. Joe says:

Half way through Alex Smith’s first successful season, and KK will be talking about how he “called it”. Dude is schizophrenic. JH

  5. tacky says:

At this point, hearing KK say the word “quarterback” is like nails on the chalkboard. I reach for the dial so fast that I nearly run my car off the road.

  6. MIZ45 says:

KK sounded like a whiny, petulant, spoiled child today (more than usual). I heard him ranting to Jack about how we got 2 backups and persisting that Jack acknowledge that. What he failed to talk about with Smith is that he wasn’t benched because his production fell off. He got hurt and SF caught lightning in a bottle with Kaepernick so they stuck with him. That’s happened before – just ask Drew Bledsoe about that 6th round draft pick out of Michigan who came in for him when he got hurt in New England. He’s right that Alex Smith came pretty close to not having a job. But look at what he’s done since. One play away from the Super Bowl, and was on his way to having another great year this past year until he got hurt.

And then there’s Chase Daniel. I get Kansas and maybe K-State fans (like KK) don’t like him because he comes from Mizzou. But get over it! You’re lucky Eric Winston won’t be here next year to blast you to the media for booing the backup quarterback for playing college ball at Missouri. Chase is a good kid who works very hard and wants nothing more than for his team to win. We got a young QB with a lot of upside in Chase. Someone should look into his preseason stats for grins. They’re actually very, very good and I believe better than any other 2nd stringer’s. And, also, Chase has been able to follow Drew Brees the last 3 years and soak in everything he and Sean Payton taught him. Speaking of Drew Brees, it’s interesting to note that KK wouldn’t acknowledge the fact that Chase was a backup…..to a Super Bowl winning, first ballot HOFer who is still in his prime! Who’s going to start over Brees besides guys named Brady, Manning, or Rodgers!? Heck, in NOLA, they may not even be allowed to start over him. Obviously, I’m not ready to pronounce Chase the second coming of someone like Brees, but I think he’ll show us that if Alex Smith goes down, KC will be just fine (and maybe even better) at the quarterback position.

  7. Xavier says:

Chiefs go 9-7, 10-6 in 2013. Reid & Dorsey have done well. As a non-Chiefs fan living in KC, I will definitely hit a game or two…& I haven’t done that in 3/4 years. I suspect there are nfl fans similar to myself that will actually enjoy a game or two after the mockery of a team they’ve put on the field the last 3/4 years(yes, including the playoff year where they backed in).

A real gm, coach with a much improved roster. So far, not a move that hasn’t improved the team on paper. We can now wait for the next two material test points in this new regime: 1) how well they run their draft. Be prepared to see them take folks you may not have heard from schools you dont know-a packers tradition every year, but they turn into 53-man roster spots.
    2) how formal their training camp is. No Todd Haley crazy stuff or easy Romeo. Timed, disciplined, etc…like a real business!

  9. Csup says:

The biggest game ever at Arrowhead was the 2003 Big 12 Championship game. Not even close.
