OTC: Jayice Pearson & Danny Parkins Throw Down Over Media’s Coverage Of Geno Smith

“Two sources told (Jason) Cole (of YahooSports.com) that when (Geno) Smith was on pre-draft visits, he spent too much time on the phone, texting friends or reading Twitter.”
Michael David Smith, NBCSports.com
GH: This criticism of the former West Virginia quarterback sparked a heated debate on 610’s The Drive Wednesday afternoon. It pitted the former Chiefs, Jayice Pearson, against the former Syracuse broadcasting major, Danny Parkins. Read on.

“He fired his agent? What’s wrong with that! Many people fire their agent! That doesn’t have anything to do with the person’s character! A lot of these character assassination (stories), you have to consider the source.”
Jayice Pearson, 610 AM
GH: Pearson was adamant that Smith is being unfairly blasted as a poor leader and malcontent due to a lazy or biased media – or worse yet, one with an agenda.

“If you don’t have anything good to say, then you just don’t say anything!”
Jayice Pearson, continuing to blast away at those who dare criticize Smith, 610 AM
GH: What kind of an attitude is this for a sports talk show host who is in a competitive time slot versus a guy who has ruled afternoon drive for 15 years? A losing attitude. If Jayice wants to say and hear nothing but sugarplums, he needs to move to the Disney Channel.

“Have we ever seen a college coach ever say anything negative about his player (regarding the draft)?”
Danny Parkins, 610 AM
GH: Parkins was on the opposite side of the Geno Smith than Pearson. He dismissed any comments or non-comments from Geno’s college coach, Dana Holgorsen, as nothing more than marketing material for his quarterback and the West Virginia program. In other words – Parkins had it right.

“(Dana Holgorsen) was not his coach at the time! He had no obligation to defend Geno Smith!”
Jayice Pearson, 610 AM
GH: Pearson is technically correct in stating that Holgorsen was not Geno’s coach at the time of the NFL draft. But Pearson’s belief that the WV head football coach had little or nothing to gain from Smith being drafted early or thought of highly by NFL teams is pure folly. Pearson continues to come off as a defender of everything from the player’s perspective. Sort of a more mature Nick Wright…but not nearly as rational.

“That’s crazy, Parkins! Whenever you make an argument you also throw out a bunch of crazy stuff to try and make your argument correct!”
Jayice Pearson, 610 AM
GH: I am just going to guess that Jayice did not excel at debate.

“I don’t understand why you’re so defensive. And I don’t understand why you’re so upset.”
Danny Parkins, responding to Jayice’s above comments, 610 AM
GH: This was just an odd, odd segment. Pearson was audibly upset by the media reports about Geno and his ire became escalated when Parkins refused to go along with his player-first mentality. This is new territory for Jayice and 610 Sports. It was my belief that The Big Show was completely out of balance in that Jay Binkley and Josh Vernier refused to challenge Pearson when he went on these rants or when he attacked their credibility. If Parkins and Carrington Harrison are willing to argue their points mano a mano with the former NFL defender, maybe this show has a chance. It isn’t likely all three will survive in an acrimonious environment but it will be far more entertaining to monitor.

“You can’t go to 50 (BBQ) spots and not pick a spot! In Kansas City, you’ve got to pick a spot! If you live in Kansas City, you HAVE to have a favorite! That is a requirement! Be a man! Stand by your convictions and pick a BBQ spot!”
Carrington Harrison, after Andy Reid was heard on a national show saying he has been to 50 KC-area BBQ joints and instead of divulging his favorite he said he “likes them all,” 610 AM
GH: Carrington and Jayice picked Gates as their favorite while Parkins went with Oklahoma Joes. Does Andy Reid need to take a stand and name his sauce of choice? It’s too early for Reid to make an honest and informed choice. The guy has only been in town four months. While he says he has sampled 50 BBQ joints, I’m guessing Andy can’t count real well. Give the big guy the summer to make up his mind and then check back with him.

“That is when we had the rights to the Royals – that giant toilet sound you hear is all of our money flushing down the toilet.”
Kevin Kietzman, as jack Harry and he discussed the three year stretch were the Royals lost 104, 106 and 100 games in three consecutive years in 2004-05-06, 810 AM
GH: If you are looking for a hint as to why KK doesn’t always sound like the biggest Royals fan, you might not need to look any further than his comment above.

“I would give (the Chiefs’ draft) a D. D as in dog. They only drafted one thing they need and that’s Nico Johnson the linebacker.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: Do you think KK may be regretting that Chiefs agreement that WHB entered into under Pioli’s watch?

“Javier (Arenas) was a good soldier for three years.”
Mitch Holthus, on the Chiefs decision to trade Arenas for another fullback, 810 AM
GH: If Uncle Mitch thinks Arenas was a “good soldier,” we can all be very glad he doesn’t have a darn thing to do with our armed forces. Arenas was a bust of a draft pick as a second rounder and just another reminder of how inept of a GM Scott Pioli was here in Kansas City.

“It drives you crazy? What do you think it does to me?!”
Mike Tyson, in his first ever interview with Howard Stern this week, when Howard told Tyson it drives him crazy to think Tyson went through half a billion dollars, Sirius XM
GH: Tyson might go down as one of the most fascinating humans who we happened to share the planet with during our time. Read on.

“I can accomplish so much more now when I have nothing than when I had that half a billion dollars. I’m just living a respectful citizen’s life. I’m living a life now here I can survive and live with dignity.”
Mike Tyson, Howard Stern Show, Sirius
GH: I think I’d like to give getting something accomplished with that half billion.

“I’m better (at being a parent) than my parents and I suck as a parent!”
Mike Tyson, Howard Stern Show, Sirius

“My kids say, ‘Dad, tell us what it was like when you was a nigger? When you were biting people’s ears and stuff.’ My kids are like in Ivy League schools for high school and stuff.”
Mike Tyson, Howard Stern Show, Sirius
GH: I am hoping these Mike Tyson quotes motivates Jake Gutierrez to play my all-time Tyson drop on Friday’s Border Patrol –Jim Gray: “You broke your back?” Tyson: “My back is broken. … It’s spinal.”

“I think he ought to stay in the closet.”
Caller Lee, when Kevin Kietzman asked the long-time BTL caller what he thought about Jason Collins’ announcing he is a gay NBA player, 810 AM
GH: This was the culmination of a great piece of radio by Kietzman. Lee is an angry caller who seems to always see race in every instance. KK turned the tables on him during this call and once again, Lee sounded ignorant.

Ruled radio for 15 yrs. Is that fact, or just the perks of having mom buy part of a radio station for you, so you can never be fired. Or accountable. Must be nice.

On a side note. Left KCI and the snow behind at 8:30 on a flight to Vegas (destination LA). Flight attendant says in 2 yrs in the business, had never seen a plane run out of alcohol. There was a group of about 8 guys that did all the heavy lifting. Never heard the word dude so many times. “Dude, dude, dude. Wild turkey dude. Dude! Not sharing a room with Andy dude. Not this time dude. Vegas dude!!” Hope those flight attendants were tipped well. I gave up on my Dr. Pepper request after an hour and a half and joined in with a Bloody Mary. Evidently they couldn’t remember the non-alcoholic patrons of the flight, but I did help run the bird out of booze. So I got that going for me!

  2. The Smartman says:

Geno Smith will never be a productive QB in the NFL. Getting drafted by the Jets assures his continued mediocrity. Only question is which talking head will have their Rush Limbaugh or Jimmy the Greek moment with Geno.

Surprised Jayice doesn’t have a BBQ joint. He should know all about getting smoked from his playing days. And no you don’t have to have a favorite spot. Mine changes from week to week. Real meatheads have favorite things from different spots. The best way to enjoy KC BBQ is to make a run on 4-8 places and get your favorite things from those joints then get medieval in a carnivore-ish kinda way. No paper towels, no wet wipes. When you’re done let the dog or your wife lick your fingers and face. Gates SUCKS! I’ve seen dinosaur bones with more meat on em than a slab from Gates. When they say Hi may I help you, the correct response is can you give me directions to Arthur Bryant’s.

I thought the flushing sound at 810 was part of the regularly scheduled programming. KK may rule the roost and have piles of cash but the fact that he never got plucked out of the nest to be the next Costas or Nance haunts him every day of his life. And no, he’s not gonna make it on the seniors tour. Watched his swing on a Metro Sports episode. More in common with Charles Barkley than Payne Stewart.

    • Mike Hunt says:

Not sure what your take on the comments from Rush and JtG are, but they are correct and they are factual. The media does and has always wanted to see a black QB succeed (though they aren’t taking too kindly to RGIII… Go figure). JtGs comment on blacks being bred to be physically superior is true. Slavery was a black eye in our nations’ history- that’s putting it lightly and words really can’t describe how awful a time it was – and he said his piece rather blunt. Maybe a bit too blunt. But truth is truth. Fact is fact. If people want to live their life thin-skinned, overly-emotional and PC about everything then fine, so be it. But when they attempt to take us that think objectively down that road that’s where the line needs to be drawn. The media and anyone else that so choses can live like that, but it’s not reality and they’ll continue being angry, bitter individuals so long as their outlook on life is such.

  3. Jim says:

As if you need any additional evidence that KK is a completely clueless douche, his quote after talking to Lee regarding Jason Collins coming out….”I choose to be straight. I like girls. Sorry, I’m not going to apologize for that.”

Seriously, Kev? You “choose” to be straight? What an ignorant fuck. He doesn’t care that Collins came out and admitted he “chose” to be gay. Well, how ecumenical.

If he learned one thing on the mean streets of Mission, KS it was that we all choose our sexual orientation.

    • The Smartman says:

Hmmm? Given that it’s KK and he likes girls wouldn’t that make him a lesbian?

  4. Kyle Rohde says:

KK might have been a jackass with the Collins story but his interview with John Dorsey yesterday during the 5 – 5:30 slot was fantastic radio. He asked great questions, pushed Dorsey on a few points while not going too far and got some great insight out of the Chiefs’ GM. I’m not a fan of KK but it was a reminder why he’s so damn good at his job.

  5. P says:

Pearson is just plain dumb. But, I might have to listen every now and then with Parkins challenging him. Beat’s the shit out of whoever is kowtowing to KK’s inflated ego.

I’m pretty sure I’d get in a lot of trouble with a half a billion dollars, but I wouldn’t mind testing the waters there.

Smartman’s remark about his wife licking his face and fingers made me throw up in my mouth a little bit.

    • The Smartman says:

      P, it’s an acquired taste.

    • Gavin says:

P, he said dog or wife. And, to be fair, he said “dog” first. I don’t know if that makes it better, but try to go with that.

  6. Gavin says:

It seems that Jayice thinks that his perspective as a former pro athlete should be all the street cred he needs and that this make his opinions absolutely beyond challenge or reproach. In other words, he’s like a slightly smarter but also thicker skinned version of Kietzman but a Kietzman who used to play the game.

    • Gavin says:

Excuse me, I meant “slightly dumber but also thicker skinned. . .”

    • Lou Brown says:

The thing I remember about his playing days is that his jersey read “JCPEARSON” not merely “PEARSON” – like he damn well wanted everyone to know specifically who was burned on that coverage. Thick skinned, maybe, but smart?

      • Gavin says:

That’s why I corrected myself, Lou, and said “excuse me, I meant ‘slightly dumber. . .’”

  7. Orphan of the Road says:

OMG, The Red Head hasn’t a favorite barbecue joint yet? The horror, the horror of it.

You pick Gate’s for political reasons. You pick Oklahoma Joe’s because you don’t remember the greats which no longer exist (oh Sherman’s).

I need another round of them all, to just begin my deliberations on The Best.

  8. Bill says:

The best part of that Jayice-Parkins exchange was reading Twitter afterwards. Parkins tweets somethining like, “Well that escalated quickly,” and Carrington tweets, “I miss the days when our show used to be fun.”

Twitter crucified Jayice, too. Calling for Parkins and Carrington to dump him from the show. I just punched in “Jayice” to Twitter’s search and cackled like Whitlock rolling blunts. A good half hour of entertainment.

I can’t stand Pearson on the radio. Dude is ridiculous and is never willing to see someone else’s opinion that differs from his. Parkins schooled him twice this week with Geno and then the Jason Collins story on Tuesday. My biggest hope is his contract is a 1-year deal and it is just about up. He can only ruin CDot and Parkins, not make them better.

    • Ultimate Dude says:

I agreed with Danny mostly on Tuesday. Being homosexual isn’t a choice. I’m not sure if its a chemical imbalance or what as Parkins alluded to, but to his point, if people can’t control their desires or what they’re attracted to, what does that say about pedophiles or serial killers? “I can’t control my urges or who I’m attracted to, its not a “choice”. Of course we all choose whether to act on our urges, and some just have no control. Collins only choice was to go public with his homosexuality. The word hero has been used to describe him.

I wonder if homosexuality is more prevalent now, more than say 50, 100 or 1000 yrs ago. Did people just never come out for fear of redicule or even possible death? If its based on human condition, are we to be accepting of everyone and everything, since its not a “choice”. Of course not. Very touchy subject which no one knows the root or beginning. Just lead our own lives as best we can I guess.

      @UltimateDude79 non-homophobic, but Christian

    • newbaum turk says:

I have a serious question. I swear I’m not being a smart-ass and hopefully not a dumb-ass but is JC Pearson in the studio or on a phone with the other guys? He sounds like he’s talking into a tin can to me. It sounds like he’s laying on a couch on the phone while the other guys are in studio.

  9. JHawkScott says:

@Gavin (since my replies never show up under), But Kietzman used to play the game. Haven’t you ever heard him throw out all his high school baseball knowledge when talking with Major Leaguers, like he’s one of the guys? :)

    • Gavin says:

I TOTALLY forgot about his days in the league, Scott. And then in his cheerleading days he was still, you know, ON THE FIELD with the players, so he really does have some street cred there as well.

  10. Phaedrus says:

I can’t stand KK’s interviews. He asks leading questions that are designed to get the guest to agree with him. If they disagree, then he tries again to get them to agree with him. He’s not looking to get straight answers, he’s looking to get the guest to agree with him, so he can then say how smart he is.

    • Gavin says:

      Word.

“Maybe I’m out on an Island here, but I think that quarterback is the most important position in football. I mean, am I wrong about that?”

“Well, no, Kevin, you’re not necessarily wrong about that.”

“Well, then it makes perfect sense that the Chiefs would draft Geno Smith with the first pick in the draft. I’m glad you agree with me. See, Danny? Even Andy Reid Agrees with me!”

“Now, wait a second Kevin. I didn’t say–”

“No, Andy, we heard you the first time. You said quarterback was the most important position in all of football and that Geno Smith is the only player that makes any sense with the first pick. So, have you had a chance to check out Smoke ‘n Fire since you’ve been here?”

      • The Smartman says:

Well since we”re playing Are You Dumber Than A Keitzman….if the center doesn’t get the ball to the QB, then the QB can’t do his thing, so that makes the center the most important guy…..right?

  11. Mike says:

In his job, Jayice is failing at objective thought. Irrational defense of players, ignoring the events or evidence at hand just doesn’t win the argument, or build credibility. Pearson still has a way to go before he can even be considered a professional talk show host.
He HAS to realize he’s no longer in the league. The good ones recognize that. The bad ones who fail to acknowledge that simple fact are undeserving of the microphone that’s in front of them.

  12. Steve says:

Re Parkins v Jayice I wouldnt classify them as Mano a Mano discussions. Its typically 2 on 1 as Carrington and Danny go after Jayice. Its clear he was forced on them because he has a contract and they dont want him there. I think they are trying to make him quit by making him look bad. Another example the other day they had Lynn Stiles on …. clearly the idea was Jayice’s and Parkins just treated him with no respect and dogged him.. No way this threesome works.

  13. Steve says:

Another thing…want to have a good weekend? Drink every time Jayice says the word “Absolutely” You’ll be hammered by 3:15

    • Jim says:

Steve, try 2 more drinking games:

      1. Every time Jack Harry says, “without question”.
      2. Any time KK is talking about the Royals and mentions his mother.

Your suggestion or these two options will get a feller stinkin’ drunk.

      • Java Man says:

I think it’s without question, that Kevin’s mother absolutely loves the Royals.

I believe the Serenity Prayer was inspired by local sports talk radio.

      • Von says:

Don’t forget to add Harry’s “Errollhead” to the list. What idiots we have on the airwaves around here. Sad.

        • b12 says:

“Really” or “I really do” are the Jack Harry crutches I hear most.

Crap. Now that’s all I can hear, like a song stuck in your head.

      • JP says:

And if you hear KK do his classic fake laugh to something that is “funny” only to an insider, then you have to chug your beer.

      • newbaum turk says:

You guys have missed the most obvious drinking game but I don’t know that I would recommend it considering how drunk you would be within a half-hour. Anytime Petro says the word “clearly” or a derivative thereof you have to take a shot. You’ll have puked and shit your pants before his show is over.

    • Taxee says:

Or “man”. That will get you a noon hammer………………..

  14. mike t. says:

my favorite jack harry quote? “well, hello again everybody.” try that one on b12. (with apologies)

    • JP says:

Another Jack Harry classic when he gets burned he always says “It’s only sports and we all have opinions”. In other words, when he gets it wrong (which can be routine if you’re Mad Jack), he always has that OUT.

  15. E.Jack Hewlett says:

over/under on how many more months of 12 meals at KC BBQ joints/month until Andy has to be hospitalized for bypass surgery? I’ll put it at 8 and take the under. Dude looks like he’s almost there already and he’s barely started.

  16. Observer says:

Hmmm, we all have different takes on things, Kyle. I listened to that interview and I came away feeling Mr. Kietzman had alterior motives behind almost all his questions for Mr. Doresey. Mr. Kietzman worked very hard to phrase his questions and attempt to guide Mr. Dorsey in his responses. My theory, based on Mr. Kietzman’s past, is that he will leverage Mr. Dorsey’s responses against him at a future time. I’d say nearly the entire interview was agenda-driven and Mr. Kietzman has it all on tape and will be ready at a moment’s notice to pull out Mr. Dorsey’s responses to leading questions whenever it suits Mr. Kietzman. That was not broadcast journalism, that was, in my opinion, a petty man providing his own future ammunition against the Chief’s current regime. Trouble is, I cannot stand the duplicitus and contradictory blather that spews from Mr. Pearson’s mouth, so it’s a choice of KCUR or a few moments of WHB for drive time … mostly landing on KCUR. Guess my radio listening scheme is “safe.”

  17. Herb says:

Pearson will defend the black athlete till death do them part.

  18. Rick says:

Herb said it best. Jayice is a racist. End of discussion.
