OTC: Nick Wright Reportedly Leaving 610 Sports / But Is He?

“Nick Wright is leaving 610 Sports. His new assignment may have something to do with his spot-guest hosting duties on a Saturday Morning national show on Fox Sports Radio. I do know that the job will not be in Kansas City.”
Chris Kamler, @TheFakeNed, ramblingmorons.com
GH: When @TheFakeNed tweeted this out on Friday, he broke the news that Wright is apparently leaving 610 Sports to take a national radio gig with Fox Sports. Wright confirmed Kamler’s report both in the tweet below and while discussing his job status on his Friday show.

“Nick Wright, 610 Sports’ most polarizing and likely most popular host, tweeted this afternoon that he will be leaving the station soon. Wright was named the best sports personality by The Pitch in 2010. Wright is perhaps best-known for hosting former Star columnist Jason Whitlock’s three-hour, tragically self-indulgent farewell verbal carpet bombing of the paper after Whitlock’s departure was announced.”
Ben Palosaari, writer, ThePitch.com
GH: More than FakeNed are buying into Wright’s supposed to departure from 610. Even Wright. Read on.

“This is true.”
Nick Wright, @getnickwright, in response to FakeNed’s tweet above, Twitter
GH: Here is what we know for sure is true; Kamler believes Nick is leaving 610 Sports and Nick Wright is more than happy to confirm this and lead everyone else into believing he is gone. I’m just not so sure. Read on.

“EXCLUSIVE: Visibly Upset Nick Wright Offers Bounty On Fake Ned”
Headline on Chris Kamler’s RamblingMorons.com website
GH: This headline might get people to thinking Wright had an issue with Fake Ned for breaking the story that he is leaving 610 Sports – but that would be wrong. What it refers to is a spoof of a bounty that Nick offered up on Ned during a celebrity flag football game. Read on.

“All ‘media’ participants were preparing for their halftime bout in their shared locker room when Nick Wright, formerly of 610 Sports, became visibly upset at the presence of this media member. I had to remind him that I do write a widely popular weekly column for the Platte County Landmark. One of the top two Platte County based newspapers. The incident then turned ugly when Wright slammed money down on his changing area challenging his teammates to “cut out the legs, knees and heart of Fake Ned Yost.” (Or words to that effect.) The $13 bounty was partnered with a expletive laced tirade about how Missouri doesn’t have any good strip clubs anymore.”
Chris Kamler, aka @TheFakeNed, RamblingMorons.com
GH: Okay, anyone reading this should understand that Nick and Ned were joking about the bounty, right? But does that mean they are in cahoots about Nick leaving 610 Sports? Is this Nick-leaving-610 buzz just a radio gag to promote Nick getting a new contract at 610 and another chapter in the ongoing Kansas City Radio Wars? Read on.

“From the Kansas City Baseball Historical Society and the minds behind The Royalman Report Podcast, we are excited to announce a new radio show on Kansas City’s ESPN 1510. The Kansas City Baseball Vault will combine the old and the new of Kansas City Baseball. The show will run Thursday evenings from 6pm to 7pm on Thursdays.”
Press Release from Royalman Report, May 1, 2012
GH: What is interesting about this new show on Union Broadcasting’s own 1510 is that Fake Ned will be a part of it. Read on.

“The show will be hosted by Logan, Chris Kamler, Troy Olsen, Michael Engel and Jeff Herr of the popular Royalman Report Podcast. The RMR has been going strong for over a year and features weekly updates on the Royals as well as interviews with bloggers, players and front office personnel.”
Press Release from Royalman Report, May 1, 2012
GH: While Royalman’s show will be purchased time on 1510, it will be interesting to see how well Fake Ned’s Twitter persona and his chumminess with Nick Wright and the other 610 Sports hosts plays inside Kevin Kietzman’s kingdom. Let’s just say the local Radio Wars is entering another campaign. As to whether the players have changed or not remains to be seen…and heard.

  1. Kyle says:

Could this be setting up for a Whitlock vs. KK drive time battle??

  2. Hawk Harrelson says:

    He gone.

  3. donkeypunch says:

    Who cares

  4. Merle Tagladucci says:

Chris Kamler wants to be relevant in the worst way.

  5. Mike says:

How much does UB charge for an evening hour on 1510? I can’t imagine it anywhere north of $200. Any more than that on a daytimer, and you’re getting hosed.

  6. Ryan says:

There was an ad on AllAccess.com looking for a new Sports Host on 610 last week before all this came out.

  7. john doe says:

I’d like to see SSJ move to 610, and do afternoons against KK

  8. Old Man Kissel says:

It looks like KK and his crew got another notch on their gun belt… Who’s next, Fescoe? 810 scoops 610 once again…

    • Bill says:

LOL. Really? Guy leaves for a bigger market, and my guess is a significant pay raise and 810 wins? Something is missing in that logic.

      • TangoAlphaLima says:

Uhhh, KK’s competition left the market. That’s a good thing for KK. 610 has had a revolving door in that afternoon drive slot since its inception, and KK has been the biggest beneficiary of it.

      • Smartman says:

True statements but misleading perhaps. Nick wasn’t even making $100K here. Some fresh out of college sales people were making more than Nick. Houston has somewhere close to 77 radio stations and I’m assuming that sports talk falls somewhere on the totem poll below country and western, oldies, classic rock, gospel, bible thumping, tejano, political talk, and 37 other genres. It’s like being a janitor at Southwest High School and going to PS 182 in Brooklyn. Looks better on the surface but is it really? Nick was just a placeholder. He NEVER gained any real traction against KK. It wasn’t because old people didn’t get him it was because he was/is atrocious to listen too. So yeah, 810 wins.

        • jjskck says:

I remember Greg posted a while back that Fescoe was making somewhere around $70k and was easily the highest-paid host on 610. Don’t know if anything has changed since then.

        • gordon says:

fuck you smartman! You don’t know shit!

  9. TangoAlphaLima says:

Greg, I think you’re way off with your Nick Wright speculation. Listening this afternoon, it seems pretty clear that Nick is moving out of town for the new job. I have to think this is some kind of national gig with Fox Sports and his “fill-in” duty those few weekends was really just an audition for the job.

  10. Jim says:

Confirmed. Is this guy the only one who asked the PD about Nick? http://www.bottomlinecom.com/wright-departing-kcsp-this-month/

    • MUC says:

According to that article their PD said Fescoe is beating his competion also. I can’t imagine Fescoe beating the border patrol.

      • Smartman says:

He is in the 18-44 IQ demographic.

        • shecky says:

Now that is funniest thing I’ve read all day, Smartman.

I’m sure that this is a step-up for Nick just like it was a step-up for Whitlock when he left the Star. Leaving before the door smacks you in the ass is very different than moving up.

Good news is that 610 has a chance to finally get serious and hire someone that can actually compete with Kietzman. Please 610 don’t take the cheap way out again. The KC market is dying for some real competition.

          • Merle Tagladucci says:

The best hire Maguire ever made was Shan Shariff, and that dude couldn’t get out of town fast enough. He bolted to Dallas. Don’t expect much.

          • Old Man Kissel says:

Wright got the job with 610 because he was there the longest and he came cheap.

610 will hire Fescoe for the 2 to 6 slot. And there will be another notch on KK’s gun belt.

            810 scoops 610 once again…

          • Merle Tagladucci says:

Maguire giving the 2-6 spot to Fescoe is equivalent to Ned Yost giving Hochevar the start on opening day.

  11. Cliffy says:

Is Kissell Boeger or Leabo? Or is it KK himself? I’ve always wondered.

Good for Nick. He’s not my cup of tea but I found myself listening to him more and more after KK decided to chase off his Mizzou listeners. He made me laugh a few times. At least Houston has an NBA team.

    Iwish him well.

    • Smartman says:

Can’t wait til one of the Rockets starts banging Nicks gal-roommate-fiancé.

      • kcredsox says:

I doubt that will happen, she can’t be too much of a looker if she is strapped to Nick.

  12. Orville Sandusky says:

It took a while…. but KK finally got over the fact that that people in Nebraska and Iowa were not going to listen to 810 or buy ads. He seemed bitter. He actually made the mistake of assuming they don’t have their own world up there. I like his program. He brings it every day and covers what is pertinent. I miss some of the cutting edge reporting… But KK is not Don Fortune yet… He will be eventually… But for now… Its a good program.

    • Mikey V says:

you must be 50’s+, because KK is a boring fuck.

      • kcredsox says:

        +1

        • Observer says:

Wait!…what?…there’s sports programming on BtL? I got the distinct impresion that for years KK was trying to position himself to replace Bodine over at KCUR. Guess it didn’t pan out for KK after ol’ W. retired. Too bad, too. I was looking forward to indepth commentary on unique BBQ sauce ingredients. Let’s hope there is a chocolate malt in KK’s near future.

Charlie Brown to Violet: “Don’t you know a sarcasm when you hear it?”

  13. The Word says:

It will be interesting to see if Wright changes his “Urban” shtick. As of 2010, 44 percent of Houston’s population are Hispanic…mostly Mexican.

I bet Wright starts calling people Vato and Essa a lot so he can have street cread in the Barrio.

  14. Harry Balczak says:

I’m just itching to find out who will replace Nick in drive time!

  15. The Donger says:

Chris and Cowboy to return to 610??? I’ve heard the offer has been made…

  16. Jip says:

Could Jason Anderson come back and jump over to 610? He’s doing drivetime in Louisville right now, but he’s a KC guy.

  17. Thank you for the good writeup. It in reality used to be a enjoyment account it. Glance advanced to far added agreeable from you! However, how can we keep up a correspondence?
